Antique 1871 "The Rifle and the Hound in Ceylon" by Sir Samuel W. Baker
Details
A wonderful first American edition of Sir Samuel W. Baker's classic Victorian sporting narrative, The Rifle and the Hound in Ceylon, published by J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia in 1871. Richly illustrated throughout with detailed engravings, the book chronicles Baker's adventures hunting elephants, deer, and other wildlife while exploring the jungles of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka).
Bound in its original decorative brown cloth with striking black-stamped Gothic ornamentation, this volume is as beautiful on display as it is historically significant. The dramatic Victorian binding, complete with hunting motifs and ornate spine decoration, makes it a standout addition to any antique library, English country house, hunting lodge, or collector's bookshelf.
The book retains its original illustrated title pages and engraved plates and shows honest age-related wear consistent with its 150+ years, including rubbing to the cloth, wear at the spine ends and corners, light foxing, and age toning to some pages. A handsome and highly displayable copy with wonderful antique character.
