Antique Solid Bronze Canova Lion Bookends
Details
A stately pair of bronze reclining lions, modeled after Antonio Canova’s famous sculptures at the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome. These early 20th-century bookends capture the neoclassical grace of Canova’s work, with finely detailed manes, powerful forms, and a rich bronze patina.
Each lion rests on a rectangular plinth inscribed “Antonio Canova”, a mark collectors seek out. The bases are lined in green felt, as originally finished, with visible core holes beneath confirming their hollow-cast bronze construction — a traditional, high-quality method used by foundries of the period.
These Canova lions carry the dignity of classical art into any home library, office, or shelf display. Their generous scale makes them especially impressive — both decorative and collectible.
