Vintage West Bengal Market Basket

A substantial vintage utility basket from West Bengal, India, near the Himalayan foothills. Traditionally made for agricultural use—harvesting, storing grain and carrying goods to market—the basket is constructed from thick natural cane with narrow woven bindings securing each course.

Broad iron straps encircle the basket and cross beneath the base, providing additional strength for its original working life. Beautifully aged throughout, with warm variation to the cane, oxidation to the iron, and evidence of old repairs and use.
